In comparison to the rest of the world Australia’s alcohol consumption is well above average.

And the Northern Territory contributes greatly to our the Aussie ‘world class average’

According to data from the Menzies School of Health Research …

  • If the Northern Territory was a country, we would rank second highest grog drinkers per head in the world!
  • Territorians drink alcohol 1.5 times more than the Australian national average.
  • Alcohol related deaths are three times the national average in the Northern Territory.
  • And … 642 million dollars is spent every year on alcohol related harm in the Northern Territory.

Drinking has become an ingrained aspect of the Australian culture and it is a big part of the Territory lifestyle. One of my key beliefs is ‘What walks in us runs in the next generation’. With that in mind, we have to ask ourselves what kind of self-care are we role modelling for our children when it comes to drinking.

A few weeks ago I was asked to be an ambassador for Ocsober which means 31 days of being alcohol free and in doing so raise money to support Life Education. Being asked had me taking a good look at my own habits in relation to drinking and thought to myself “Yep, Catie reality is you are drinking too much wine and you are beginning to rely on it to relax and tune out” so I took up the challenge and joined Ocsober.
