During Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week from 1-7 September 2014 I was invited in to the studio at Mix 1049 Darwin to talk about the prevalence of body image issues and eating disorders within our community.
Body dissatisfaction is widespread and directly linked to unhealthy eating behaviours that greatly impact on our social, emotional, mental and physical health and well-being.
It’s time to talk about this issue, bring it out of the closet and remove the ‘secrets’ and ‘shame’. It’s time to change this culture – collectively, we can make a difference.

In support of Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week, I also hosted a morning tea event on Friday 5th September.
It was so wonderful to have over 50 people attend the morning tea. It just goes to show, once again, how important it is for us to help create a more body positive community.
I made a small presentation to share some of the latest information about body image and eating disorders and we then had a discussion about taking action in Darwin to help make a difference.
It was very proactive and we collectively initiated a monthly get-together for women (and men) who would like to connect with others who are or have experienced eating disorders and or negative body image. We could have called it a ‘support group’ however, we’ve called it a ‘celebration group’ instead – celebrating who we are as opposed to what we do or do not do.
If you’re in Darwin and would like to know more about the group or to be involved, please contact me to let me know.
Here’s a huge THANK YOU to Mel’s Raw Delights for donating the yummy cakes and to Eva’s Botanical Gardens Cafe for donating the beautiful venue, the catering AND staff to set up, prepare and serve and pack up :). I also have an extra special thank you for Amy Brabin and Onika Paolucci for having the courage to share their stories at the event – you are truly inspirational.
